ABC WEDNESDAY: Last Name of Ruttan

The Last Name of Ruttan-

My husband’s family can be traced from four brothers who immigrated from France to Canada and the state of New York.  My husband’s father and his siblings were born in Canada.  Listed below are Ruttans found in the online Wikipedia. I do not know any of these people personally, but they quite possibly could be related to my husband's relatives. . A few years ago at the Christmas Gift and Hobby Show in Indianapolis, we saw a display of a man whose last name was Rutan. Curiosity led us to talk to him about his name. He said he’d traced his family from four brothers from France. It’s probable that somewhere along the line
the extra ‘n’ was added. Who knows why- we don’t.

God bless the veterans who served to keep our country free. This includes my husband who was in the U.S. Air Force. And bless those who are still serving in the military. Thank you.

Ruttan is an unusual name Nonnie, doesn't really sound French either.
Quite often our names derive from our forefathers line of work,
Rut in the English language means to dig ditches or a furrow made
by a tractor, so putting all that together could imply that the Ruttans were farmers that worked the land?
Was your husband a farmer or similar ?

Best wishes,
Di.

Di, my husband, his father and uncles were not farmers, but judging from the family home I pictured some Ruttans might have farmed.

thanks, Mascha, I like to get feedback about my quotes. I try to match the quotes to the post that day, but it's not always possible to do that.

Genealogy is fun and exciting. I can only go back to what the Mama remembers, which isn't much, so I live vicariously through the Husband's finds of his family.

Yeah, those Double N folks probably thought it was classier!
