Small Stones, Day 21: Frustration

Frustration! Water pipe heating cable not working. Water needing to drip 24/7 or pipes will freeze again. Waiting for the order… Finally able to track it today. It was delivered somewhere in Knoxville, TN ,  last Friday. I live in Indiana ! Now waiting for the store manager to call to see what’s next. Waiting…….  Then… What do I see outside my window? A FedEx truck! So was Knoxville just a stopping place? When I stated to the driver  that the package was in Knoxville. He muttered, “I guess they  (the ubiquitous they?)  were behind. So who knows? Not I! Do you suppose  THE SHADOW knows? Too young to know to whom I'm referring? Go here  to read about him or YouTube  to listen.

Gifts from My Cousin

When I heard the postman knock at my door, I thought my Carson's order had arrived. But, no, it was surprise box from  my cousin Cheryl and her husband Jerry! Getting the scissors, I scored the box lid with them and quickly opened the box, then took my gifts from  the shiny, gorgeous gold bag. Ta da, my gifts are... "Dandy" the bear, as in Yankee Doodle Dandy, I opine, and a rocking horse! Now, this song by George M. Cohan  is marching around  in my head! I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy, A Yankee Doodle, do or die. A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam, Born on the fourth of July. I’ve got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart, She’s my Yankee Doodle joy. Yankee Doodle came to London Just to ride the ponies. I am the Yankee Doodle Boy. When I saw Dandy up close, with his long arms and the Mohair material of which he's made, the similarities to Steiff bears came to my mind. The history of Steiff bears can be viewed  here . ...

a Medictation: Huron Carol by St. Jean de Brebeuf

The Magnificat's Meditation of the Day for Tuesday was "Huron Carol".  It was the first North American Christmas carol.  The song was written by Jesuit father and North American martyr Saint Jean de Brebeuf pencil drawing by Helen Hull Hitchcock in Quebec, Canada, where he was a missionary to the Huron people.  The words are not exactly the same as in the devotional, but I think they both express the love Brebeuf felt for Jesus and the Huron people. Below are the lyrics that I found here . Twas in the moon of wintertime When all the birds had fled, That mighty Gitchi Manitou Sent angel choirs instead; Before their light the stars grew dim, And wond'ring hunters heard the hymn: Jesus, your King is born, Jesus is born, In excelsis gloria . O, harken to the angels' word, Do not decline To heed the message which you heard: The Child Divine, As they proclaim, has come this morn Of Mary pure. Let us adore. Jesus is born, In excelsis gloria . Within a lodge of broken ba...

Signs, Signs: Smoothie Sign

I know that this song  refers to an alcoholic drink, but when I saw this sign, here's what popped into my head and stayed awhile! You can hear Rupert Holmes sing it on YouTube . I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too long. Like a worn-out recording, of a favorite song. So while she lay there sleeping, I read the paper in bed. And in the personals column, there was this letter I read: "If you like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain. If you're not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain. If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape. I'm the lady you've looked for, write to me, and escape." I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean. But me and my old lady, had fallen into the same old dull routine. So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad. And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half-bad. "Yes, I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain. I'm not much into...
