In Need of a Boost in Writing

Times when I stumble onto a path that leads nowhere in writing, I often get a boost from a book titled  The Awe-Manac: A Daily Dose of Wonder by Jill Badonsky So today I availed myself of it because I have been extremely negligent in even my daily journaling let alone writing beyond that. The following are my efforts today: Awe-Manac November 15, 2012 Daily Soul Vitamin: I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life-and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do. ~Georgia O’Keeffe~ Toast of the Day: Here’s to the feeling of a just-cleaned refrigerator. Awe-servances: Happy Birthday to:  Georgia O’Keeffe, 1887, artist who often transformed her subject matter into powerful abstract images. I appreciate the new genre name given to books that were called comic books in my youth.  Certainly it will be more enticing to many young readers.  I think that however one can lead reluctant readers to love leisure reading is worthwhile.

This sight is why I do not understand why we have the rule in our mobile home park that leaves MUST be raked. 1. First, one loses the nutrition of the leaves being left to embellish the soil. 2. Second, one adds to the the landfills with plastic bags. Of course, the bags are not of the recyclable kind. 3. Third, added cost to the city for the trucks used to pick up the bags. Really, it costs us individually too for tax increases. 4. Fourth, those in their seventies and up bear the cost of hiring someone to do the raking and bagging.  That is, unless they are lucky enough to have a family member available to do it. One year, my son and I bagged more than 100 bags of leaves. He was unlucky enough to live where the wind created a whirlpool of sorts and brought leaves from the surrounding homes into his yard.  I quit counting the bags at 100.  A week or so later, we quit raking and bagging.  The owner of the park sent his maintenance person to blow those leaves into bags and charged my s

Veteran's Day: Honoring Those Who Served

At the left is my cousin's uncle Billy, and at right is our uncle John. On the back of the photo, it's dated April of 1945. It was taken on Guam. Featured here is Uncle Raymond, who was on leave, and his wife Mary.  They are standing in front of the apartment house in which the uncle shown below lived.  And in the background is the house in which my grandparents lived. Uncle Roy John (served in the Navy attached to the Marines because he was a medic), Raymond (Navy) and Roy (Army) were brothers. I was too young then to appreciate the sacrifice my grandmother also made because three of her sons served in the military during World War II. During the Korean War, my uncle Charles was in the Marines.  I remember writing to him; by then I was a teenager. My husband served in the Air Force during that same "police action."  I didn't meet him till he was discharged.  He continued in the reserves for a few more years.
