12 Days of Mary: Our Lady of Lourdes

Startled and fearful,
the girl child views a lady,
so stunningly beautiful that Bernadette
dare not speak.
She kneels and her arm is paralyzed
when she attempts to do the Sign of the Cross.
Eighteen times in all, Bernadette is blessed
with apparitions of Our Lady.
Now the girl child's name
is known world-wide by believers.

When I was confirmed, I took Bernadette's name for my Confirmation name.  I chose it because of her unbroken faith that she saw Our Lady. Even when no one believed her and she was poorly treated
by her priest and village, she continued to trust
what she had experienced.
Such faith is what I strive for daily.
Bernadette's story can be read here.

I have a soft place in my heart for St. Bernadette...I worshiped her when I was little, her life seemed impossibly daring...she was such a brave little hero, I wanted to be just like her♥

Bernadette's story is the story of those of us who continue to believe and trust our experience in spite of others who may ridicule. Thank you for sharing this with us, Norma!
I am not Catholic and I did not know that you take a spiritual name on confirmation! What a beautiful tradition! I visited Lourdes last year and stayed for a few days - it was beyond anything that I could have imagined!! Her Presence is tangible at the grotto and the loving works of her devotees are to be seen everywhere in Lourdes

what a blessing she must be, then, for everyone who is fortunate to visit there!

I so enjoyed reading about Bernadette's life and her apparitions leading to sainthood. I have a wooden statue of Our Lady of Lourdes standing right here on my desk, yet I never really know anything about her until now. And it seems that we share our birthdays...what fun!

Her faithfulness is an example for us all. Such strength!
Isn't it amazing that Mary comes to us when, where, and how we need her to come!

I have always loved the story of Bernadette. Remember the movie with Jennifer Jones? So lovely. It made me so happy when we joined the parish Our Lady of Lourdes in Northridge, Ca. I would so love to visit the real Lourdes some day. Thank you for sharing this.
Bernadette's story is beautiful and Lourdes is such a magical place,I wonder if it was so before her vision.
Have a lovely day,
Ruby
Hi Norma - Actually I saw the movie when I was a kid on one of the local Los Angeles stations - way before cable!
