From what I’ve gleaned online, it was the third courthouse built in our county.

My first thought was so where's the rest of the building? Did they spend so much money on the cornerstome that they couldn't afford to build the rest?

The courthouse built here is long gone, Tony. In fact, the one we had when I was a child is also long gone. For some reason, they decided that new is better, but it certainly doesn't have the stateliness the old one had. It's just a box.
